A tiny tiny letter
Dear friends,
The elections AND the celebrations of democracy in the form of rallies and marches the day after election day happened peacefully all over the country. So many people made this possible, including most of you. Deep gratitude to all the poll workers, vote protectors and greeters, and those who have been working for years for the record turnout that made history.
Here is a short wonderful video of the Durham COUNT EVERY VOTE rally and march on Wednesday, as well as information about the event in Raleigh tomorrow, Saturday November 7.
People from all over the state will gather at Halifax mall at 1 pm to celebrate our wins in this election, declare our determination that this election not be stolen, and reclaim and rebuild North Carolina by connecting people and groups in a diverse coalition. This is being led by mostly young people and I hope many of us will support them.
There may be counter-protesters. Be prepared not to escalate any hostility they may bring. I keep returning to George Lakey's article, "How to face right-wing violence."
One very helpful thing we can do right now is to sign up to cure ballots in North Carolina.
You can also sign a petition from Color of Change to demand that Twitter and Facebook suspend Trump's accounts.
To get up to the minute information about mobilizations and build a movement in North Carolina post-election, sign up for this statewide coalition: NCTeamDemocracy.org. They are the group planning the event tomorrow in Raleigh and they are planning another one next week.
Please read this, sent by Cliff, "Protests Won't Be Enough to Stop a Coup," from the Atlantic. And, if you have time, Rob Schofield's article, "The GOP's cynical, effective and deadly secret electoral weapon."
Most of us have had trouble sleeping, have been anxiously following the count, are simultaneously relieved and worried about the future, and are generally exhausted. I'm sending this out early in case you didn't know about the event tomorrow. I can't do more right now but will send out the link for Tuesdays's zoom next week. Be safe, and let's keep figuring out how to protect and support each other. I hope you can get some rest.
love,
Karen
