Democracy Out Loud #436.1: Rapid Response
We must meet militarized police escalation with massive peaceful protest.
Dear Friends,
Over the weekend, things escalated rapidly, notably in Los Angeles where beloved labor leader David Huerta was brutalized and arrested for no apparent reason, Trump deployed the National Guard against the will of Governor Newsom, and his “Border Czar” Tom Homan made dire threats.
Meanwhile the crew of the Freedom Flotilla including Greta Thunberg were arrested in international waters while attempting to bring lifesaving supplies to Gaza.
Please see the NC Poor People’s Campaign email below and show up if you can for the action by the Union of Southern Service Workers today and by El Pueblo tomorrow. And, of course, find a protest near you this Saturday June 14 and make plans to attend with a friend or two.
The power of our deep desire for all people to have basic human rights as well as our determination not to have friends and neighbors sent to concentration camps is very great. Let’s grow that power together and organize it with discipline and open hearts.
love. Karen
Dear Friends,
On Friday afternoon, military-gear-clad ICE agents launched aggressive raids throughout Los Angeles. At one location, SEIU-USWW President David Huerta was assaulted, injured and detained while advocating for immigrant workers. While he has been released from the hospital, he remains in federal custody.
Our friends at USSW are organizing a rapid-response rally in Raleigh tomorrow (Monday, June 9) with groups around the nation to show that we stand with David and all workers against targeted by ICE.
When: Monday, June 9th @ 2:00pm
When: Moore Square, 201 S Blount St, Raleigh, NC 27601 US
And the attacks are going on RIGHT HERE IN NORTH CAROLINA. Last week the General Assembly advanced two extreme anti-immigrant bills, SB 153 and HB 318. The NC Senate will be voting on SB 153 on Tuesday June 10th. Join us in packing the gallery for the vote to take a stand against this bill!
When: Tuesday June 10th 3:00 PM, we expect the voting session to begin at 4:00 PM
